Michael Bublé Wows The Press In Sydney, by Eva Rinaldi - 10th February 2011

Michael Buble

The time had finally come for one of the greatest singers of all time, Michael Bublé, to return to our shores, and he didn't disappoint the press gathering.

The setting was the beautiful Quay Restaurant at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, The Rocks.

This must have been one of hundreds, if not thousands of pressers for Bublé, but for me it was my lucky 3rd, since going pro only a few months ago.

The ultra gifted Canadian has won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards and several Juno Awards. His first album reached the top 10 in both Canada and the UK. He gained tremendous worldwide commercial success and exposure with his 2005 album It's Time, and his 2007 album Call Me Irresponsible was an even greater success, reaching #1 on the Canadian Albums Chart, the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, the Australian ARIA Albums Chart and the European charts. At last count Bublé has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide. In 2010, with concerts achieving a levy of $65 million worldwide.

He has a soft spot for Australia, having toured here a massive 8 times before, 4 promo trips and 4 tours. I was impressed to learn that in February 2009 he pledged a donation of A$50,000 to the victims of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria, Australia. I knew he had heart and soul in abundance, and he clearly knows just how blessed he is. It just gives you a warm feeling to know he's reached out to some Aussies going through a tough time in a world seemingly removed from his jet set lifestyle.

The superstar whose hits include versions of Cry Me A River and Georgia On My Mind, will be appearing at Sydney's Acer Arena on February 14th, 15th and 17th 2011.

Commenting on the enjoyment he gets from playing live, the 35-year-old has said: "I just love getting in front of people. It's so important to be in touch with your audience. They've paid their money, I want them to be entertained."

Fans can expect to pay between AU$90 and AU$149.90 for tickets to his shows. Bublé will also perform in Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide during the Australian tour.

A big hug and thank you to you Michael.. I know you will get to read this eventually, and also for your world class team, especially the good folks at Kerry O'Brien publicity.

I think its fair to say that the industry needs more like Bublé.

With Valentines Day sneaking up on us all, taking in a Bublé concert or just buying his 'Crazy Love' release, seems like a mighty fine idea. Rekindle an old romance, or sparking up a new, it seems apparent Bublé's gift will touch many. You can't help but to love this beautiful man, and for me its time to fall back in love all together again. Thank you Michael.

127 Hours Red Carpet In Sydney, Australia; Nominated For 6 Oscars, by Eva Rinaldi - 7th February 2011

Aron Ralston Photo Credit: Eva Rinaldi

Danny Boyle's 127 Hours did the red carpet at Sydney's Event Cinema, George Street, Sydney earlier this evening. The highly acclaimed film has been nominated for six 2011 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (for James Franco) and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy).

The Fox Searchlight flick tells the story of Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who amputated his own arm to free himself after being trapped by a boulder for nearly five days.

The movie tag line is 'Every Second Counts', which is accurate, be it when fighting for survival in the mountains or in the day and the life of a photographer such as myself covering red carpet events.

For the press pack on this particular night, it seemed to be more fun than work, and the vibe was reflected in the vast majority of celebs looking and acting fantastically for the photographers. The quality of the photographs captured by the pros reflected this. I even had more fun tonight than I did at my last red carpet.

Some of my favorite celebs of the night who seemed to like me and my lens included Lincoln Lewis, Kerri-Anne, Richard (and son) Christian Wilkins, and TimOMatic (who danced it up for the cameras and crowd). Lincoln even teased a kiss with his girlfriend Rhiannon, while Shannan Ponton ('The Biggest Looser' host) went passionately all the way with beautiful wife Kylie Stray on his arm, showing the love is in the air as Valentines Day starts to sneak up on us.

My rating of the film? Based on what I've seen and researched, 4.5 stars out of 5. Highly recommended.

The band’s upcoming album heralds a new beginning with guest vocalists joining the five band members to rework classic INXS songs into new incarnations. The project has been in progress for the past year, with Ben Harper’s version of ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ released last month as the first tantalising taste of what is to come.Tracks have been recorded by Rob Thomas (Matchbox 20)Pat Monahan (Train), Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), hip hop star Tricky and JD Fortune, with more to be announced. The album is a unique, challenging and inspiring way to bring classic INXS songs into the modern era and to a whole new audience.“INXS is really excited to be playing in some great locations around Australia, and to our fans,”

After playing theatre shows here in June, the band are looking forward to the larger winery shows and introducing their music to a wider audience.

THE BABY ANIMALS roared into Aussie rock history with their 8 times platinum self-titled debut album in the early 90s, with hits like ‘Early Warning’, ‘One Word’ and ‘Rush You’ firmly establishing the band, and its charismatic front woman Suze De Marchi. After disbanding in 1996, they made a hugely popular return in 2008, and again earlier this year in the ‘Rock N Roll Symphony’ national tour with Chrissie Amphlett and Diesel.

Suze has recently returned to Sydney after decades in the US, and with original Baby Animals partner Dave Leslie is working on new material and keen to hit the stage again.

The announcement that Models would be inducted into this year’s ARIA Hall Of Fame is recognition of the status this pioneering Melbourne band and its pioneering frontman SEAN KELLY has always held. Emerging from the post new wave scene, Models’ produced ground-breaking albums ‘The Pleasure Of Your Company’ and ‘Out Of Mind Out Of Sight’. Andrew McManus Presents The Original Wailers, Raggamuffin Festival 2011

The Origional Wailers: Photography Eva Rinaldi

Bob Marley and the Wailers have sold more than 250 million albums over the past 40 years and it has been his band that has helped create this international success.

Now many of Marley's legendary musicians, together with other renowned reggae sessionmen, have now reformed under the title of The Original Wailers. It was these celebrated musicians who gave Marley the platform for his explosive brand of roots rock reggae, and audiences will be delighted to learn that the magic and commitment's still there, all these years later.

Keyboard player Earl "Wya" Lindo first joined the Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer in 1973, at the time when the Wailers' debut album for Island Records, Catch A Fire, was first released. "Wya" has played on classic records by Bob, Peter and Bunny, as well as the Abyssinians, Dennis Brown and many others, including U.S. bluesman Taj Mahal.

American born guitarist Al Anderson joined the Wailers a year later, just prior to Natty Dread becoming Bob Marley and the Wailers' breakthrough album in the US. It was Al's playing on hits like "No Woman No Cry" that first alerted rock fans to the Wailers' music, and lent Marley's songs their international appeal during his career. He's played with Peter Tosh, James Brown, Traffic, Ben Harper and Lauryn Hill. He also produced Steven Seagal's first album Songs from the Crystal Cave.

Bob Marley enrolled singer/guitarist Junior Marvin in the Wailers during sessions for the Exodus and Kaya albums, shortly before the band's legendary appearance at London's Rainbow Theatre in 1977. A former rock artist, his solos on tracks like "Waiting In Vain", "The Heathen" and "Jammin" have proven unforgettable, confirming him as one of reggae's premier instrumentalists. Exodus was Junior's first album with Marley and the Wailers and it was voted 'Best Album Of The 20th Century' by Time Magazine. Junior has also played with Ike & Tina Turner, Steve Winwood, Stevie Wonder, Toots & the Maytals, and recently with OAR.

Junior, Al and Wya toured and recorded with Marley until his death in 1981. This places them among the rare few - the only true torchbearers of his legacy - which they memorably helped to create. Now The Original Wailers, with Junior handling all lead vocals, promise to recreate musical history as they continue to spread the message of "One Love."

Andrew McManus Presents: Ky-Mani Marley, Raggamuffin Festival 2011

Ky-Mani Marley, Photography credit Eva Rinaldi

Ky-Mani Marley The Marley surname perpetuates Jamaican royalty, resonates world-wide recognition and represents the pioneer of a cultural, political and social revolution. Reggae Icon and Legend Bob Marley blessed the world with his timeless, brilliant and message filled sound which continues to inspire and influence audiences today.

With such a living past, Bob Marley's conviction and passion for music unintentionally was passed to the lives of his offspring and has allowed the Marley name to remain relevant amongst the hierarchy of the reggae sound.

Son of "Bob Marley" Bob Marley and "Table tennis" table tennis champion Anita Belnavis, .Ky-Mani Marley is the second youngest of Bob Marley's eleven children. While bearing the Marley name, Ky-mani's childhood told a different story. Born in Falmouth, Trelawney, settling in Miami at the age of 7, Ky-mani was raised in the inner-city in a 2 bedroom home along with 8 family members. Being exposed to an urban lifestyle, Ky-mani adopted the attitude that all people are equal - no one is above or beneath him. This attitude has become the motto for the way he lives his life today. Humble. Soft-Spoken. Sincere. Loyal. Honest. Genuine. These are the makings of Ky-Mani Marley.

As a child Ky-mani had no interest following in the footsteps of his world-famous father and was more inclined to play sports. However, the seed that was planted by Bob's legacy sprouted in 1997 when Ky-mani teamed up with hip hop artist Pras of The Fugees and collaborated on Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue". This would be the defining moment in Ky-mani's journey which would lead him to pick up the torch his iconic father lit so many years ago.

Remaining true to his Jamaican culture, Ky-mani's fondness for all genres of music influences the work he creates. Ky-mani is an artist with no limits. Incorporating world music, hip hop, blues, rock and a grass roots sound into his music, the end product is the pure representation of life for Ky-mani. The Ky-Mani Marley sound is one that transcends cultural lines and prohibits him from being categorized as only a reggae artist. His raw, unadulterated, gruff sound captures the listener and reverberates the essence of Ky-mani's life story. Songs such as "Dear Dad", "I Pray", "Ghetto Soldier" display the versatility and fiery-passion Ky-mani exudes when sharing his voyage through song. Peace. One Love. Unity. Street Life. These are the makings of Kymani Marley's music.

In 2002, Ky-mani starred as the character Kassa in One Love. Amongst film festivals and critics this film is another masterpiece in the Ky-Mani Marley collection, it was released in theaters throughout the Caribbean and Europe. In addition, Ky-mani is set to reprise his lead role in Shottas II.

Subsequent the release of his album Radio in September 2007, Ky-mani has been on tour with Van Halen and done all major festivals in Europe and South America during 2008.

His television credits include: BET J - Living the Life of Marley; NBC/Telemundo - The Shuffle; Fox - Happy Hour with Cody Willard and Rebecca Gomez, Music Choice, MTV Jams and VH1 Soul to name a few.

With a new energy and revitalized spirit, the future is promising for Ky-mani., his autobiography "Dear Dad" was released on February 6th, 2010. He is working on his new clothing line Konfrontation, focusing on his non-profit organization LOAF, Love Over All Foundation while relentlessly recording new and exciting material for his upcoming album "Evolution of a Revolution" that will surely represent a new era of sound.

The new recordings will continue to highlight the myriad of Ky-mani's influences. His new works will prove to be a blend of genres that will touch the inner-soul of each listener.

Andrew McManus Presents: Jimmy Cliff, Raggamuffin Festival 2011

Jimmy Cliff: Photography Credit Eva Rinaldi

Greetings to everyone, my name is Jimmy Cliff, actor, music innovator, singer, songwriter, music producer, "Artivist", businessman, and much more...
I took on to myself that name with the intension of establishing myself thoughout this Planet, as high as the Cliff's of Adelphi Land where I was told I was born which seemed like the highest peak on the Earth to me as a child.

Adelphi Land is a village in the District of Somerton in the parish of St James Jamaica an Island in the Caribbean sea. That mission of establishing myself is more then half way there.
My parents named me James Chambers at birth and today they remain my hero and "Shero".

I was making music from the day I came out of my mothers woomb and said "AAAH" and I was acting since I can remember I could walk and laugh like my mother.

People would pay me to do that so acting is what I loved to do most and even today I think I am better at that than singing/songwriting.
I discovered I had a very unique voice in primary school and at the Pentacostal Church my family went to.

When the political landscape was changing in Jamaica as the Island had became independent from Britain, so the music was up beat expressing the spirit of the people tothis change hence we got Ska an uptempo upbeat rhythm.

The Sound System was and is an integral part of the Jamaican social scene especially theworking class who rely on this for their entertainment and social life. The middle andupper class fly to Miami and N.Y while the working class depend on the Sound System, which had an impact on my life from my boyhood days in the countryside of Jamaica where I could listen the Sound System at the big upstairs house that was beside the little house where I lived with my Father and my Brother.

This big upstairs downstairs house had a bar called " Money Rock Tavern " where the Sound System called "Pope Pius" would play and this was my me only opportunity to hear different kinds of music especially Latino.

My parents were staunch Christians so I was not permitted to associate with those kinds of music so I had to hide and steel away to go to the fair grounds where dances and fairs were held. I could see and learn the latest Dance moves and hear the latest, Rumba, R'n'B, Calypso, Merengay etc...
A little later in my youth life my Father managed to buy a little battery powered radio so I had another opportunity to tune in to American radio particularity New Orleans and Miami, and of course Cuba which is close to Jamaica only 90 miles away.

On the local radio station I learned of local Artists writing and recording their own songs so I decided to write my own while still in school, quite a fete for a little country boy but I had high ambitions. Among the locals that inspired me wave Derrick Morgan, Prince Buster and Monty Morris.

After leaving primary school at Somerton my father took me to the capital of Jamaica Kingston to go to Kingston technical school, with a few songs in my head I had written.

Where I was going to live was unknown but I ended up in East Kingston. Miss Gwen a stranger Lady said she would cook and wash my clothes while I slept with my cousin in his one rented room.
I was happy to be in Kingston to fulfill my dreams....

I tried many producers while still going to school studing radio and tv trying to get the songs recorded without much luck. I entered talent shows and won some and was cheated on some. One night I was walking past a record store and restaurant as they were closing, I pushed myself in and sang for the Chinese owners of the store and convinced one of them Leslie Kong to go into the recording business starting with me.

My second recording with him Hurricane Hattie became a number one hit in Jamaica. I followed that hit up with Miss Jamaica, One Eyed Jacks, King of Kings and Leslie Kong went on to become King Kong among the producers in Jamaica.
This was the ska era of Jamaican Music.

Chris Blackwell a Jamaican/British music producer/businessman was the point man in the UK for Jamaican Music.
I was on my way to fulfilling my mission when I met him while invited to perform along with other artists at the NY's World Fair.

He invited me to relocate to England after that. My sirjourn to Europe was full of valuable experiences. I recalled the racism I encountered in the UK with my Band, in housing, accommodation and just day to day living. Racism is something I had known even in "Somerton" when spending social pastime at the river swimming and cooking. Some of my friends would say, look I am browner than you, which means it is better to be brown and best to be white which I found out is international racism.

In the UK the difference is you would be told up front we don't rent or sell to blacks whereas in Jamaica racism was subliminally suggested. So racially I had to fight for my identity and my survival. Then musically I had to be flexible to keep working. Culturally I had to learn to overcome the shock.

After about four years in Europe touring and recording I was invited to perform at an international song festival in Brazil which proved very successful for me. I journeyed through all South America touring and writing song in Argentina, Chille, Uraguay, Colombia, Panama and Mexico ending up in Miami where I finished some of songs. Wonderful World Beautiful People was one of them which became my first international hit.

From Miami I went home to Jamaica after 4 years away where I recorded the songs except for Many Rivers To Cross which I recorded in NY where I put the finishing touch on the recordings. I return to the UK with the finished product. The Album was put out on Island Records Blackwell's company as all my other recordings I had done up to that time

I decided to call the Album just Jimmy Cliff even though it was called Wonderfull World Beautifull People in the US.
My mission was increasingly being realised. I continued writing, recording and coproduceding with Leslie Kong one of the hits called Let your Yea Be Yea for The Pioneers, another hit for Desmond Decca called You Can Get It If You Really Want and a minor hit for Millie Small called Honey Hush.

I scored another hit for myself with a Cat Stevens song Wild World. There were a few other minor hits in the UK before I was offered to play the lead role in a movie to be shot in Jamaica The Harder They Come which became a landmark movie and put my career to another level.

I was now being recognised as an actor the thing I love to do the most. This movie also expose the world to the music visually that has now become know as Reggae.

After the movie became a hit in most of Europe, USA, Australia it was not released in Africa and South America as well as most of Asia, I parted company with Island Records.

I went on tour to Africa and parts of the Caribbean. I am know more in South America, Africa and parts of Asia for my music not as an actor. I signed contracts with various major labels such as EMI, Warner Reprise, Colombia, etc...
The knowledge of my culture had increasingly became important to my life as much as my professional life. So from Christianity, Western Political concept, Rastafarian, Black Muslim, Islam, Budisim, Marksisim, Judaisim, Hinduisim and the way of life of the indigenous peoples of the Planet I dived into them all, ending up knowing that all there concepts and philosophies actually originated with my ancestors. This satisfied my soul, and help me during some hard time of my life especially when my mother and father pasted away.

I continued writing and producing Albums that came out on the various labels I signed with as well as my own labels Oneness, Sunpower Poductions etc.. in Jamaica and the Caribbean. I had hits in Africa which were not hits in Europe or USA and vice versa.

My tour of South Africa became controversial as it was during the apartied era, it was an experience that will always stand out in my memory.
Following that tour I went back to Brazil doing a tour with Gilberto Gil. I went on to make another movie called Bongo Man sort of autobiographical sorounding a free concert I did in my District Somerton.

A few years after that I did another movie called Club Paradise along with Robin Williams and Peter Otole and another cameo role with Steven Seagal in Mark For Death writing and recording songs for both those movies.

A collaboration I did with Kool And The Gang during those two movie period resulted in a smash hit world wide except the US called Reggae Night.
Now coming towords the end of the 20th Century I did a cover of Johnny Nash's I can See Clearly Now for the movie Cool Runnings, another World wide hit and a Reggae version of Hakuna Matata for the movie called Lion King a European and African hit.

Humanitarian and Journey of a Lifetime were my two last Albums to close the 20th Century which up to then must be at least 22 studio Albums.
My first Album in the 21st Century is Black Magic which I originally did with Dave Stewart titled Fantastic Plastic People.
It was a new and wonderfull experience for me to do an Album of duets.

Sharing a special moment with each of different artist like Sting, Annie Lennox, Kool And The Gang, Joe Strummer, Wyclef Jean, Yannick Noah, and also Jamaican Artist Tony Rebel, Steeley and Cleevie, Bounty Killer, Spice, Hawk Eye ,Nadz , Tessanne Chin etc..
I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I did.
In January 2005 I did my first full length concert at "Rebel Salute" in Jamaica for many moons.

Andrew McManus Presents: Mary J. Blige, Raggamuffin Festival 2011

Photography Credit: Eva Rinaldi

There's little, if any, denying that Mary J. Blige is one of the greatest singers of our time. The proof is in the consistent #1 albums and singles, six (6) Grammy awards, seven (7) multi-platinum records and 15-years of love from the public, critics and fellow artists. Since her 1992 debut - the modern classic What's the 411 all the way to 2005's stunning The Breakthrough Mary J. Blige has helped to redefine R&B, and more importantly, been an artist that uses her gift to lift spirits, touch lives and bring her heart, soul and truth to those who are willing to listen.

Mary's eighth studio CD, Growing Pains, comes on the heels of Mary's best-selling anthology Reflections (2006). It's also her first CD of new material since The Breakthrough debuted at #1, selling over an astonishing 700,000 copies its first week - setting a record at that time as the best opening week for a solo R&B female artist in SoundScan history. The album's first single, "Be Without You," also made chart history by holding down the #1 spot on the Billboard "Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums" chart for a record breaking sixteen (16) straight weeks; making it her biggest hit, so far, of a career filled with them. In addition "Be Without You" made its way into history books when it became the longest running #1 song on the R&B chart in over 40 years. As if that wasn't achievement enough The Breakthrough and "Be Without You" earned an astonishing eight (8) Grammy award nominations with Mary winning three (3).
Ask what fans can expect from Growing Pains and Mary J. Blige is characteristically upfront. "They're going to get a sense of what my state of mind is and how I view the world," she says. "And hopefully, most of all, they're going to hear just the sincere honesty and love that I have for them. I'm always putting myself out there like, look. I love ya'll. I got ya'll. I'm rocking with ya'll. So that's what they're going to get, that commitment. I hope they're going to be very happy with that."

You can hear Mary's own happiness and strength all throughout Growing Pains. Working in partnership with some of the best in the game e.g., Tricky and Dream, Neyo and Stargate, The Neptunes, Dre and Vidal, Jazze Pha, Sean Garrett, and featuring guest appearances by Ludacris, and Usher, Growing Pains is the sound of an artist in love, in touch, in control, and not afraid to show it. More than anything Growing Pains gives you straight up Mary letting the public share her world, and delivering a message that says, Love yourself. Believe in yourself and kick negativity to the curb.

Mary makes her message loud, clear and seriously funky on the hit single "Just Fine," produced by Jazze Pha and Tricky and written by Mary and Dream. The single makes for Mary's eighteenth (18th) top 10 single on Billboard's "Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs" chart tying her with Mariah Carey for the most Top 10 songs on the chart in the Neilson Music Era (from 1993). "Just Fine," a celebration of life, gives you Mary fierce and (as the video shows) glamorous. The songs' vibe? "Sometimes it feels like you're having this miserable time, like all 365 days of the year are tough. But then, you get one of those days; maybe when your hair is great, or you're not stuck in traffic; where it's a 'just fine' day. At some point," Mary laughs. "You've got to have one or two of those."

The party and positivity keeps on keeping on with the rump shaking second single "Work That" - currently featured on an Apple iPod commercial. "Work That" is upbeat, strong and deals with finding the good in you. "When I meet a woman who doesn't know what to do about her weight or her hair I always says to her 'whatever it is that you have, make that work for you, work what you got."'
Mary takes her own advice on the non-stop jam "Till the Morning." Produced by the Neptune's and written by Pharrell, "Till The Morning" takes you way back by referencing 80's club classics. Mary states: "It's about whatever your 'till the morning' is. If it's hanging in the club all night, if it's lying in bed with your man and enjoying him all night - that's your 'till the morning'."

Love's the force behind "Roses," another collaboration with Tricky Stewart and The Dream. Mid tempo, emotional and grown, "Roses" is about having to work to make it work, the real in relationships, and that it's not always all roses and candy.

Relationships are also the theme on the sultry "Shake Down," a mid-tempo duet with Usher that has the feel of those classic R& B partnerships.

Throughout Growing Pains you hear Mary pushing herself in ways she never has: especially vocally. There are jazzy inflections, girl group coquettishness, nuanced phrasing: a full range of tones and textures.

She also continues to mature in the studio: taking control of the total recording and creative process and doing so with confidence and chops. "Making records is different than when I started because now I know what I want and there's not fifty people running the show. Now (husband/creative partner) Kendu Isaacs and I run the show. Kendu's ear is good, my ear is good, and we're honest with each other."

Needless to say, when you have that type of success all eyes are on the next release. Mary keeps it all in perspective by focusing on what really matters. The journey. The growth. The love. And as always the music and the fans. "I'm still trying to heal and get better and that's what Growing Pains represents. It's about accepting that there's pain that goes along with growing and change. No pain, no gain."

Andrew McManus Presents: Maxi Priest, Raggamuffin Festival 2011

Maxi Priest, Eva Rinaldi Photography

Music insiders would have you believe that there are a variety of musical genres and categories, and that common ground is few and far between. However, the bottom line is that people embrace music and rhythms that mean something to them, no matter what their background. As Maxi Priest knows, music is universal. Over the course of 10 albums and countless live performances all over the globe, Maxi has unleashed a one-world music that heals, rejuvenates and uplifts.

The second youngest of nine children, Maxi's parents had moved to London, England from Jamaica. His father was a steelworker in a factory, while his mother devoted her life to Christianity; she was a missionary at a Pentecostal Church and lead singer for the church choir, and as a youngster Maxi grew up listening to gospel, reggae, R&B, as well as pop music.

While working as a carpenter building speaker boxes for a local reggae sound-system, Maxi Priest began singing over the mic at live dancehall sessions with artists such as Smiley Culture. In 1984 Maxi made a bit of history after he and Paul "Barry Boom" Robinson produced Philip Levi's "Mi God Mi King, " the first UK reggae tune to reach Number One in Jamaica.

His 1988 album Maxi, was recorded in Jamaica with legendary musicians Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, and Willie Londo, and was released in America by Virgin Records. With "Some Guys Have All the Luck", a cover of Cat Steven's classic "Wild World" that gave Maxi his first U.S. smash hit, and roots tracks like his duet with Beres Hammond, level, gaining him worldwide recognition.

Two years later, Maxi released Bonafide, which achieved gold status, and the single "Close To You" hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and Number Two on the Hot R&B Singles chart.

In 1991, Maxi's collaborations with Roberta Flack, "Set The Night To Music", and with Shabba Ranks, "Housecall," again took Maxi to the highest chart echelons, and he capped off the year by releasing Best Of Me, a powerful compilation of hits from his four previous albums.

By the early to mid 90's, Maxi was critically acclaimed for his skills in balancing hard-core reggae vibes with more mainstream pop sensibilities and that approach added to his growing popularity as both a recording and touring artist.

In 1996, Maxi released the hit CD Man With The Fun, which contained the crossover single "That Girl," a duet with Shaggy. "That Girl" became a Grammy Nominated track and the accompanying Hype Williams-directed video became and MTV staple.

CombiNation, released in 1999, is a sexy and soulful album embracing reggae, hip-hop, R&B, rock, jazz, pop and rhythms, containing production and songwriting work by Sly & Robbie, Robert Livingston, Simon Law, and Joe. The album contains "Mary's Got A Baby," featuring a sizzling rap from Beenie Man; pumped up electro-dancehall beats on the fierce and furious "She Wants To Dance" featuring toasters Degree and Red Rat; an uplifting track "We Tomorrow's People" a collaboration with the acclaimed acid jazz band Icognito; the smoothed out old-school R&B Donny Hathaway/Roberta Flack cover of "Back Together Again" featuring Elisha La'Verne; and the righteous reggafied take on Stevie Wonder's classic Golden Lady."

Since his 1988 debut, Maxi has enjoyed tremendous success as a singer with popularity and recognition around the world. In fact, he is the most successful reggae solo artist in the world, second only to legend Bob Marley. He has enjoyed numerous worldwide hits as well as a Number one pop chart smash and is widely credited with helping spread the gospel of reggae and Caribbean music.

His 2005 album, "2 The Max" includes the dancehall anthems "Full Hundred" and "Sweat A Go Buss" (featuring Beres Hammond) and the hot new single "Believe In Love" featuring 2005's hottest new rhythm.

Maxi Priest's music continues to grow. 2008 saw Maxi on tour with UB40, Toots and the Maytals, Third World and Rik Rok on the great Reggae Sunsplash Tour. Also Maxi's new video, "Makes Me Wanna Hallah" (from the album to be released soon) is capturing a new and excited group of Maxi Priest fan.

Big Day Out, Airbourne

AIRBOURNE have been waving the rock and roll flag for Australia both at home and overseas since 2003. AIRBOURNE crank out with all cylinders firing potent, solid and good ol’ fashioned rock and roll.

“Basically, we’ve never been about having a specific message; we don’t talk about politics or social injustices in our songs. There are other bands out there to take care of that,” says rowdy lead guitarist and vocalist Joel O‘Keefe.

The band latest album No Guts, No Glory is a true testament to AIRBOURNE’s way of life…the album is a virtual rock and roll buffet served up this summer at BIG DAY OUT 2011.

JIM JONES REVUE will be burning the house down at BIG DAY OUT 2011.

The JIM JONES REVUE manifesto is simple, and ferocious: "If you're going to get on stage,” says guitarist Rupert Orton, “deliver." And that they do, riffing on Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis for a rock’n’roll sound that could have come direct from the 1950s, if it wasn’t fused with the so dang wild, loud and loose vibes of The Cramps and The Birthday Party.

The Londoners may have only dropped their debut in 2008, but don’t let that fool you – these five punk rock bluesmen have been around. Hot on the heels of their blistering second album, Burning Down Your House, JIM JONES REVUE are set to fire up BIG DAY OUT this summer.

Big Day Out, The Vines

One of Australia’s most talented and infamous bands, THE VINES had a meteoric rise from a suburban Sydney garage to the cover of NME in UK and Rolling Stone in the USA. This is a band with enough genius songwriting to fill four albums.

THE VINES feel their story is only half written. Wanting to make it up to their loyal fans for a cancelled Big Day Out slot in 2009 the band are all set for BIG DAY OUT 2011.

Marking the return of THE VINES is a brand new single Gimmie Love on your radio soon with a new album to follow in the New Year.

And what better way to welcome back THE VINES than to have them kick start the main arena. THE VINES will be proving their rock attitude credentials when they set the bar for the day as the first act of the day. We salute you. (ALL AUSTRALIAN SHOWS)

Interview with Passenger (Mike Rosenberg) by Eva Rinaldi

Mike Rosenburg

Passenger is a classic journeyman musician, cut from the same mould as Van Morrison, Neil Young and John Prine. His latest critically acclaimed album 'Flight Of The Crow' which features collaborations with Josh Pyke, Boy and Bear and many others was self funded entirely through money earned busking across Australia & the UK. He returns to the road off the back of a sold out headline tour to again take his audience on a musical journey from the humorous to the heartbreaking.

Being a journeyman musician, the name 'Passenger' suits Mike perfectly. “Watching the world go by, song writing, story writing set about a series of collaborations with musical friends along the way; after the band broke up I just kept the name,” he explains.

Mike has performed in quite a variety of venues. I wanted to know the difference between busking on the streets and performing to an appreciative audience of 20,000 people. He was happy to oblige. “Some buskers perform all day, some are totally unique in their performance, it’s a different mindset busy presenting their show living a life of wonder outside the office cube and down a carefree highway,” he starts. “It’s great to actually treat to feed each other, it’s so amazing to perform in front of a live audience that have paid to watch you; sometimes I would get nervous not knowing how I would come across to people and trying to tap straight into the crowd is a great feeling.”

The most difficult part about being in an industry of feeling, emotions and art, it is quite an effort to balance the two aspects of feel and finance. So how does Mike aka Passenger measure success? “Selling over a hundred CDs in a bag was a great feeling, it’s not about selling it for the money but the buzz you get when strangers are listening to your CD in their car. It is a wonderful and extraordinary feeling,” he says.

Worst days for the singer? “In the worst day of busking sometimes cops move you along and there are so many things you can and can’t do it all depends in different towns with the different laws it all varies."

Passenger’s new album “Flight of the Crow” is currently making the rounds. The story behind the name is as unique as the sound on the album. Mike explains: “Well one my songs is called Flight of the Crow. He’s caught in a net depressed and sad and has a lot of stuff to let go.”

One or two of Passenger’s songs reminded me a bit of Simon and Garfunkel. I wonder if he's heard that before.I ask anyways. “I have, it’s a massive compliment, I’ve heard that before. It’s incredible.” He adds that his “influences have also been Neil Young and Bob Dillon- anything from the 1960s.”

Speaking about the media, Passenger is one of those singers who steer clear of what people think about his work. “I try not to read my reviews. Everyone will always have a different perspective of you and you won’t always please everyone. However it’s great to get recognition.” He doesn’t fail to mention Rolling Stone magazine where his music was rated a 4 on 5.

Passenger’s collaboration with Boy & Bear has led to the IMB Building Society commercial. As Mike explains, he “met them as mutual friends, at a gig on board, a lot of fun doing a track with them, one thing led to another.” Apart from this combined effort, Mike is also looking forward to touring with 'Old Man River'. “Met a month ago at the same booking agent, a great and talented guy, we just got along,” he explains.

Passenger’s song 'What Your Thinking?’ has beautiful lyrics that mention “Just a photograph in a draw” and “the ghosts we can't forget”. Explaining what’s behind the words, Mike explains: “Own experiences everyone can relate to some break up or an old photograph you find, past and hurt I try to write things that people can relate to everyday circumstances, things about life.” More interesting is the fact that his album was recorded in one day. Was that stressful?

“Extremely stressful, I went in as a drums and bass player, normally people take a week to do that, it looked like it wasn’t going to happen, overall it was a huge success,” he replies.

Other than travelling and music Passenger’s hobbies include “football, soccer, swimming, walking and reading.” In the course of the interview Mike also adds his fascination for history. “You wouldn’t probably think it’s very surprising or even very cool but I love to read history books, I love anything about History,” he says.

Passenger is all ready to perform in Sydney with shows lined up throughout the country in February. “Annandale is a great venue; I’m excited to go back it’s quite a rock and roll kind a feeling great audience,” Mike exclaims.

Without thinking too much about his professional and personal highlights of this year, Mike has smartly chosen to continue his journey and enjoy the ride. “I don’t think it’s something you can ever guess what will happen sometimes when you think it’s going to work out it doesn’t and vice versa quite often hard to predict,” he explains.

Passenger will be performing at The Between the Bays Festival that happens at Penbank, located at the end of Rickards Road in Moorooduc, Mornington Peninsula (Mel Ref 146 G8) approximately 1 hour south of Melbourne. There is 35 beautiful acres to spread out in and enjoy the day, nestled ‘Between the Bays’ and just five minutes from Mornington, which has many different accommodation options.
